“Obama campaigned against Mr. Bush’s unilateralism. George W. Bush opposed nation-building. Bill Clinton was averse to George H.W. Bush’s purported “coldness” in foreign policy. The elder Bush, for his part, was a much better tactician than he was a strategist (George H.W. Bush famously quipped that he lacked an understanding of that whole “vision thing”). As you can see, American foreign policy has not only unmoored America from its hard-won dominant position atop the international system, but U.S. foreign policy itself has become unglued by America’s political leaders over the last 30 years.”
Tactical Brilliance, Strategic Dissonance
America has become increasingly militarized at home and brilliant at tactical military victories abroad. However, it lacks strategic leadership and vision. This article argues that with the level of Strategic Dissonance we are currently experiencing, there is no wonder weapon available or in development today that will save America from its downward trajectory in foreign policy. What is needed is a revolution in strategic thought, not military affairs.
Losing the War on Drugs, Part II: Mexico & Regional Destabilization
The Drug War has raged for over forty years. Yet, since 2006, the global War on Drugs has taken a turn for the truly awful. The Mexican Drug War has cost over 100,000 lives, it has destabilized not only Mexico, but also the entire Central American region (and, with Venezuela destabilizing on its own, the instability caused by drug cartels could spread there as things get more desperate). This piece assesses Mexico’s War on Drugs and how the U.S. can best respond to this instability.
