Bizarre Pelosi-Assad Entente

Then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) defied the White House's attempts at isolating Syria during the Iraq War, by meeting face-to-face with Bashar al-Assad in Damascus. This was a signal to her Republican opponents that the Democrats were going to be more assertive in foreign policy. It was also eerily similar to the much-ballyhooed Donald Rumsfeld-Saddam Hussein handshake from when Rumsfeld represented the Reagan Administration as Middle East Envoy.
